Crafts For Kids

What are this crafts for kids?

It seems that we become a society of complainers. People love complaining about how different our children are growing up compared to how we were raised, but no one wants to take responsibility for this. If children spend the time to do things which we consider to be unhealthy, it is not our responsibility as adults to offer them to other activities?

When I was growing up Sundays were family days. We would either have relatives over for dinner or we would be invited to a relatives home. The main meal of the day was eaten at noon, adults play cards and the children would play outdoors in summer and in winter, we could make some type of crafts. Who ever was hosting the Sunday gathering would supply  the crafts for children. It was during a Sunday afternoon that I learned how to sew, paste, stamp, and make jewelry. Many of the projects were simple things that we could complete in the afternoon, but others things that we should work for several weeks. My aunts and my mother was very creative in coming up with crafts for children that held our interest and improved our skills.

Now, that I am a parent, I continue the Sunday tradition going with my children. We stay home more than we go to relatives, but the day includes a grand meal and crafts for children in the afternoon. We started this as soon as the children can safely handle the items necessary to create a variety of handicrafts. Now that the kids are getting older they sometimes include friends in crafts for children on Sundays. Once in a while there is some complaining for not being able to play the computer, but this usually ends when the craft projects are done. I still enjoy doing different projects so I can come up with a wide variety of crafts for children, that are fun and help them learn to create. My daughter has taught me how to knit. she wanted to make a scarf that required knowing how to knit. She bought a video that showed how to knit step by step,  then she showed me how to make one. Crafts for children do not need to be elaborate and expensive. The main goal is to help children understand that they can create things with their hands and also have a time each week when you can relax and enjoy the company of family members.

Activity for Toddlers

What are the right activities for toddlers?

When you have a little one in your home, you often worry that you are not doing enough for them. What you should know is that the toddler can not take a lot of information at school, so that you can not go wrong with almost all activities for a toddler of your choice. You do not have to worry about what you teach, and it is more important that they learn about relationships and life skills rather than ABC and numbers. They can learn the basics of both, but you do not have to smother it. It will not do any good.

My favorite activity for toddlers with my little girl was playing catch. Although this seems to be a simple activity, it helps them learn to do many things with their bodies, and that is what they should be learning. Parents who seek to get their children to recite the alphabet at the age of three are wasting their time and they are very unrealistic about their children. They must learn to judge distance, using their fine motor skills, and learn to be polite and take turns. Playing catch is a great activity for toddlers that teaches all these things without even trying.

Almost everything that involved  physical movements  is a great activity for toddlers. They are at a stage in their lives when their small bodies are getting growing, and they are learning to use them. The more they move and play, the better they will ultimately be. You want them to be able to do an activity for toddlers to help them be coordinated and healthy. You can do this by running in the lounge or you can play with them outdoors. Movement is movement, no matter where you do it.

If you can not find the right activity for toddlers to fit your life, you should look online for suggestions. You will find lots of great  ideas. You may find all the great ones that you do not have time to do them  all. Remember that even if it is good to have a great activity for toddlers to do each day, children still need unrestricted play time. Although the activities are important, free time is essential for their development of their imagination. The more you allow their imagination to grow and prosper the better life will be all the way around.

Parenting Tidbits

Monday, February 25th, 2008

New parents face many problems and issues that they are expected to understand and deal with immediately.  Unfortunately, newborns do not come with an instruction book so here are a few topics that you may need to know about.

  1. Bathing your baby: Until your baby’s umbilical cord falls off one to two weeks after their birth, only give her sponge baths.  A cotton ball or cotton swab dampened with alcohol can help to dry the umbilical stump or follow your pediatrician’s directions.  After the stump falls off, you can give him a bath in a sink or shallow tub.
  2. Caesarian delivery: A caesarian is usually performed to make delivery safer for you or your baby.  C-sections can be done for many different reasons including stalled labor, complicated labor, problems with the baby that may make delivery difficult, or other problems.  It does not matter if you deliver vaginally or by a caesarian section, you are still a mother with a beautiful new blessing.
  3. Circumcision: Many doctors agree that there may be some benefit to circumcision, but it may not be absolutely necessary.  It may help to lower the risk of urinary tract infections and eliminates just about any chance of penile cancer.  Circumcision does not cause long-term emotional problems for your child.
  4. Crib death (SIDS): Many studies have been done regarding SIDS.  Although the cause of SIDS has not been definitely defined, there are some correlations that have been made between SIDS and the following things:
  • Male babies are more likely to die from SIDS than females and this is usually caused by prematurity
  • Minority children are affected by it more often than non-minorities
  • More children of young, single mothers die from it
  • Children who live in a home with one or more smokers are more likely to be affected

Some people say that sleeping with your baby can reduce the risk of SIDS, but the American Academy of Pediatrics disagree with this statement and go on to say that there is a greater risk of SIDS in babies who co-sleep.

Back sleeping is what most pediatricians recommend for babies to decrease the SIDS risk.  The reason for this is widely debated between health experts.  If you have concerns, talk to your pediatrician.
