My Parenting Advice to You

Saturday, May 9th, 2009

How exciting is it to be pregnant for the first time? I was beyond excited; there were no words really to describe how I felt. But, what I didn’t know stretched my emotions across the spectrum. Jumping between utter joy and complete worry was almost as exhausting as my first 3 months of pregnancy!! I was feeling very overwhelmed about the physical changes my body was about to go through. That lasted until I felt the baby move for the very first time. After that, I didn’t really care what I had to endure; I was bringing life into this world.

One of my biggest worries was if I was going to be a good parent or not. You can buy all the books in the world on parenting, but I have found, after 3 kids, that there is no perfect parenting handbook. Those books are good guidelines, but what may work for one child, may not work for the next. No two kids are the same so no situation can be handled identically. And parenting is a full-time job, one that lasts pretty much the rest of your life. One of the best compliments I can ever receive is when someone I know or even a stranger tells me I have well behaved kids. I mentally pat myself on the back and think “I am doing ok.” I can’t say great because I am not done raising my kids. We may have the basic manners and such down, but there is so much more to teach them about life.

I have found that other parents can be a great source of parenting tips. Most times, all you have to do is ask; sometimes you get it freely. You can also find parenting tips online and in books. But I rely on my mom the most. She raised 10 kids. I believe she knew what she was doing. A lot of parents will give you advice on how to handle certain situations and most of it can be very valuable. You just need to apply the knowledge when the situation warrants it. Not everything is going to be the magic answer, but it can definitely help first time parents. My parenting tip is to do what you think is right for you and your baby. You will know deep down if it is.

Teaching A Child To Walk

Saturday, December 13th, 2008

Exercise is essentially important to the health of the infant. Its first exercise, of course, be in the arms of the nurse. After a month or two, when it begins to sleep less during the day, it will delight to roll and kick on the sofa: it will make free use of its arms, with the realization outdoors is all the exercise they need at this time. By and by, however, the child will make his first attempts to walk. Now, it is important that none of the numerous plans that were designed to teach a child to walk, should be adopted as go-cart, the last strings, etc, their tendency is mischievous, and the flatness of the chest , confined lungs, distorted spine, and deformed legs, are all evils that often come from such practices. This is because the bones in childhood is relatively soft and flexible, and if prematurely subjected by these contrivances to carry the weight that results as an elastic stick bending under a weight, and as a natural consequence become curved and distorted.

It is highly necessary that the young and experienced mother should remember this fact, for the early efforts of the little one to walk are naturally viewed by her with as much pleasure, it is likely to encourage and extend its attempts, without thinking of the mischief they may occasion , more than one parent has had to mourn the strain on which it has itself created.

It may be as well here to point out that if such distortion is timely noticed, it is capable for correction, even after evident curvature has taken place. It must be remedied by the use of these resources that are part of boost and promote the general health of children (daily plunge into the cold bath, cold or sponge with salt water is clearly effective), and avoiding the cause of the distortion does not allow the child to get to his feet. The only way to accomplish the latter intention, is to put both legs in a high density, which effectually answer this purpose, while at the same time, it does not prevent the free and full exercise of the muscles legs. After some months pursuing this plan, limbs are no longer deformed, the bones have acquired firmness and strength of muscles, and the Child may be allowed to get back on its feet, no risk of perpetuating or renewing the evil.

The best method of teaching a child to walk, is to let him teach himself, and what he will do it quite easily. He will first crawl: it exercises every muscle in the body, it does not fatigue the child, throws no weight on bones, but gives the force and strength, and is therefore very useful. After a while, have the power, he wants to do more: it will seek to raise on his feet with a chair, and if it fails, again and again in his attempts, he will always persevere until done. In this, he learned, first, to raise himself to the floor and, secondly, to stand, but not without keeping a hand on the object on which he seized. Then, it will balance itself without holding, and proudly and laughingly show that it can stand alone. Fearful, however, not yet of movement of its limbs without support, he will take a chair or something close to him when he had the audacity to advance as regards to the limits of his support. This little adventure will be repeated day after day, with increasing joy, when, after numerous tries, he feels confident of its power to balance himself, and he will be alone. Now is the time required for this gradual self-teaching, during which the muscles and bones become strengthened, and when finally called upon to support the body weight, are perfectly capable of doing so.

Child Learning Disabilities

Wednesday, October 22nd, 2008

While learning has always been easy for me, I had friends who are dealing with child learning disabilities. Most cases were mild, but there are children who have serious problems, and many times these problems go undetected. These children are often labeled as problem children and are desciplined as such. They never have a fair chance because they are hampered by the disability that labels them as trouble-makers rather than just children who need extra help with their studies.

One of the most common child learning disabilities is ADHD. Although this was something that was recently been recognized and accepted, it has been around for a long time. My older brother had, and he was labeled as a trouble maker, and finally expelled from school. My brother was a good kid, but this more frightening to the child learning disablities, gave him nothing but problems. Although he was simply trying to overcome what is before him, he was seen as someone who has been labeled as “un-teachable.”

I am ashamed of this school district, and I know I will never send my children there. My mother went several times to talk about these child learning disabilities, but nobody would listen. They thought there was law, and there is nothing you can do to change his mind. I wish that my mother had a mind to raise a great stir at the time, maybe it would have made them a different look at what they did. If they thought it could really have a child learning disabilities that are out there, may have been able to help, and his life could be better now.

If you suspect that your child is in acting-up in class for reasons you can not understand, you may want to see if they have child learning disablilities. There are many times when children have problems, and not because they are bad because they can not keep up, they can not see the blackboard, or may be even have hearing problems. They may nave also  ADHD, or maybe they have one of the many other children learning disabilities there. There is usually a very common pattern of disruptive behavior, and if more parents and children take the time to find out, there would be many more children graduating from high school.

Child Evangelism

Monday, August 11th, 2008

The evangelization of children is one of the most important issues that we in the Church have to face. The evangelization of children is crucial to the success of any church, and the future of the community of believers. Evangelization programs Bible study, youth groups, puppet shows, and anything else you use to gain the trust of children is among the highest of work you can do for God. The problem is that the evangelization of children must be treated with a delicate touch. Too much or too little, and it does not work.

For example, as an adult, you can not preach the word of Christ to children who have not been saved. Legal risks are simply too great. Never mind that you try to save their immortal souls, and if you try to undermine parental authority, you can be prosecuted. This means you can lose your job, your freedom, and even your right to a church.

One of the churches with which we have had a fellowships had this happened to them. One of their parishioners brought in some children from their neighborhood which are a family of atheists . When they tried some child evangelism  on them, the children went home and told  their parents. They did what they thought fair. They were frightened by new ideas, and believes that parents should know. When the child’s parents sued for  continued evangelization, the church costs thousands of dollars. The minister was virtually evicted from the city and the church has lost a lot of money that could have served to establish ministries.

That is why the church for the evangelization of children must be more subtle. All evangelism must be the  evangelism of Jesus, but not all the needs of evangelization to announce the name of Jesus. While being involved in the community, to give children a healthy alternative to drugs, a church can offer the evangelization to children. Once the children understand how the Church cares about their welfare and well-being, they will be interested in what ministers have to say.

Once you are approached by children, you can watch them directly. However, it should be the first to broach the subject. The evangelization of children can be on a soapbox. It requires tact and faith. This is not to pull the children separated from their parents or their communities. The goal is to put in the church of God.
